St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley says the recent commitments by Greg Echenique and Austin Johnson to Rutgers could help influence star junior Dominic Cheek.
“I think Rutgers helped themselves,” said Hurley, who was in Atlanta Tuesday where he was named the Naismith National High School of the Year at the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “I think that will help keep them on (Cheek’s) list, too. They got a big man there (Echenique). His very good friend (Mike Rosario) is there.”
Asked about Seton Hall, Hurley said, “They’re in there, too.”
Hurley said he had given his players two weeks off after completing a perfect 32-0 season and winning the Tournament of Champions and that Cheek would not focus on recruiting until after the break. The 6-foot-5 junior is being recruited by numerous schools, including Villanova, Texas, Florida, Ohio State and UConn.
“We haven’t done anything yet (with recruiting),” Hurley said. “We gave them two weeks off.”

**Mike Quick and Jimmy Cavallo have a nice piece on Bob and Dan Hurley, and Rosario and Samardo Samuels, in this week’s High School Weekly on MSG. LIne of the piece: “I actually do what he (Danny) doesn’t do,” said Bob, who doesn’t have caller ID in his office. “I actually answer the phone all day.”
The piece also covers the relationship between Jorge Fontan and his son Jio Fontan, and his God brothers Rosario and Travon Woodall. The trio live together in Paterson under Jorge’s roof, along with about 10 family members. For more on this, read my story from earlier this year.
**Woodall was named MVP for Team USA against Florida in Saturday’s Senior Showcase in Orlando after scoring 22 points.
**Rosario missed a 3-pointer in the McDonald’s All-American Game contest when it went in and out of the rim. He finished with 11 points in the first round. Larry Drew won the event with 17 points. Samardo Samuels had 13 in the first round and Sylven Landesberg 10.
