Kelly Says He’d ‘Entertain’ Talks with Irish

Wow, talk about some strange timing.

With Brian Kelly’s Cincinnati team trailing Pittsburgh in the fourth quarter of a game that determined the Big East winner, ABC plugged an ESPN.com story that says Kelly would “entertain” the idea of talking next week with Notre Dame officials.

Apparently the timing of this didn’t impact the Bearcat players, who overcame a 31-10 deficit to win 45-44 and capture the league’s automatic BCS bid.

Bad job by the ESPN sideline reporter not following up with Kelly after the game, though.

That said, Kelly is apparently keeping the door ajar to take over for the fired Charlie Weis in South Bend next season. Kelly is now 12-0 on this season and has a 34-6 mark in three years at Cincinnati.

Meantime, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops denied a Chicago Sun-Times report that he is the leading candidate to take the Notre Dame job, telling the Tulsa World, “I will not be the next coach at Notre Dame.”
