Fed-Nadal Ready for ‘Grapple in the Apple; Williams’ Sisters Could Meet in Quarters

When Roger Federer won his fourth straight U.S. Open last September, beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets, it seemed a near-inevitability that he would become the winningest tennis player in history.Federer’s 12th Grand Slam title put him within two of Pete Sampras all-time mark of 14, and it looked like only a matter of time before Federer would break the record.

“I think about it a lot now,” Federer said last year of Sampras’ mark. “To come so close at my age is fantastic, and I hope to break it.”

But a funny thing happened on the way to inevitability.
