Lance Stephenson didn’t look ‘Born Ready’ in his college debut.
The 6-foot-5 Brooklyn native started and shot 2-for-10 for 7 points in Cincinnati’s season-opening come-from-behind 69-62 victory over Prairie View A&M.
He was 0-for-3 from beyond the arc while adding 4 rebounds, 2 assist and 1 turnover in 22 minutes.
“He was a nervous wreck,” Bearcats coach Mick Cronin said. “He’ll get better. I have to make sure he isn’t putting too much pressure on himself. When we were struggling, he was the one guy getting visibly more physical. You could see his frustration and his desire to win. I have to teach him how to channel that and there is no such thing as a ten point shot. He was trying to do everything himself, which is good and bad.”
The Bearcats trailed 38-30 at halftime before outscoring Prairie View 39-24 in the second half behind 12 of Deonta Vaughn’s 15 points.
Vaughn came off the bench in the second half after going 0-for-6 to start the game.
“He responded,” Cronin said of Vaughn. “Deonta is a great kid, but he has to give us better leadership. He has to make sure these guys are ready to play. Before the game when coaches aren’t in there, he has to make sure they are ready to play. Upsets happen in college basketball.”
Cincinnati made just 39 percent of its shots, while shooting 27 percent (8-for-30) from beyond the arc.
On Stephenson, Vaughn said his teammate was clearly “frustrated” in his college debut.
“That is for any freshman that comes in,” he said. “Your first couple of games is the hardest for you. I just have to talk to him and tell him how it will be for the rest of the season. He doesn’t have to force anything, and just let it come naturally.”
Cronin won’t make Stephenson available to the media until December, but hoops fans will have plenty of chances to see Lance on TV. In perusing my TV schedules, I see that both SNY and ESPN are showcasing a whole lotta Lance.

WALL HITS BUZZER-BEATER
Kentucky freshman John Wall hit a pullup 15-foot buzzer beater to lead No. 5 Kentucky to a 72-70 victory over Miami (Ohio).
“When it hit the bottom of the net, it was a relief, a great feeling,” Wall said, according to The AP.
“John Wall catching it and going, I loved it,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said.
The 6-foot-4 Wall, projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, finished with 19 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Wall sat out Kentucky’s season opener against Morehead State because of amateurism issues.

What about UK? Over Rated…Over Rated.
This is not a final four team.
Does Kansas BLOW OUT Memphis? by 30.
(Memphis schedule is cup cake central.)
At least Memphis has a good 2010 recruiting class.
Beating UK Calicats in recruiting.
(when will www begin to help Cali?)

Kentucky is a young team and will not fully gel for another month ……in the meantime the FACT is they are undefeated and ranked 5th . Kansas is a 10 point favorite over Memphis ….. I find this curious …I expected 15 to 17.5 type line . The game may be more competitive than most expect …… if Roburt Sallie heats up he could make it interesting . On the other hand I wouldn’t be shocked by a 25 point Kansas win……should be a fun game to watch .

Jessie,
I put you in the same boat as the USCtrojan character that is always posting on here. Of course Memphis has a cupcake schedule this year. They were descimated by Calipari taking his recruits with him to UK. Many teams backed out of verbal agreement games and Pastner was struggling to put a staff together the same time he was trying to finish out the schedule along with recruiting.
The fact you even took a pot shot at Memphis with that comment shows your immaturity and general lack of knowledge about what it takes for a new coach coming in, especially under the circumstances Pastner walked into. Have you seen Arizona’s schedule? The Pac-10 isn’t a powerhouse conference this year either. UCLA going down to Cal State, Oregon State and Arizona State are jokes.
Again, not a Memphis fan, but cut that program some slack. No one expects them to hang with Kansas tonight. And no one will take anything from this game. It speaks volumes of Pastner not backing down from this game considering he was offered Arkansas if he wanted.
And as much as I hate UK and Calipari, I wouldn’t get on the UK sucks bandwagon either. No, Calipari is not a good X and O’s coach. Yes, he stole this offense from a man that is now an assistant of his. But, there is too much one and done talent on this team for it not to make noise. I have a feeling they will be a 4-5 loss team, but they are Top 10 good unfortunantly. I do not think they are a final four team, but don’t bash them after one game moron.

The UK scare doesnt surprise me at all. This is the kind of thing that happens to young teams. NOW uk fans will realize it isnt easy, when people have been trying to tell them that very thing all along.

jhawk4 / November 17, 2009
just to add to that, UK will get it figured out and be a top 10, maybe top 5 team by the end of the year, but there is no way that they are #5 in the nation today

La Salle has just signed top 25 guard Sam Mills from Cardinal Gibbons High in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Mills is ranked as a top 25 guard in the nation by some scouting services. He will begin play for La Salle in the 2010-11 season. This signing makes La Salle (Tyreek Duren joins Mills) and Duke as the only two teams in NCAA to sign two of the top 35 point guards for next season.

Lets talk about Harris:
Most believe that it is between: Kentucky and the Orange
(WV was elminated.)
If I was a betting man, I would go with the Orange.
What does this mean to Kentucky Calicats? Major recruiting troubles continue.
Another recruit goes elsewhere.
That leaves: Josh S. or Knight and CJ Leslie as MUST gets for Cali.
Hopefully, www can assist.
Note:
I do not believe Eric B. will go to the NBA, not a first rounder.

Oh pasta, everything i post you feel the need to attack it, even when in this case there was nothing to provoke attacks.
you and me have got into it before, but give me a break, i wasnt being a “hater” or “trashing” UK or memphis. let it go

Looks like KU needs to get it figured out ….maybe they will be a top 20 team by March

bigpapijugg / November 18, 2009
ya UK is overrated, yet when Kansas has to beat the worst Memphis team in history with a buzer beater they are just fine. Oh and how bout MSU they seemed to struggle a bit also. Every team in the top 5 has struggled. UNC only beat FIU by like 12 so i think every top team is off to a slow start.

pasta, knowledgeable fans dont argue rankings in november remember?
in all seriousness, KU played dreadful tonight. that was about there D game.
Im disappointed in how they played. Aldrich was the only one who showed up. I love tyshawn, but he was atrocious out there tonight. turnover machine. Collins didnt do much. Henry took some bad shots. Reed didnt make anything. Morris’s were okay. Aldrich got virtually no help from his perimeter shooters (KU made 1 three!) KU was lucky memphis couldn’t shoot either or they would have lost.
There is no excuse for some of the poor play and carelessness out there tonight. Having said that, i’m confident Self can make our team better from it and it will help in the long run. hats off to memphis, they are a better team than i expected and will be dancing.

The Memphis Ku game further illustrates what a fluke win Ku got in 07 ……their program is no match for Memphis
