Boost Mobile: Cheek to Visit Memphis, Indiana

NEW YORKDominic Cheek is still narrowing his college list, but he knows a couple of schools he wants to visit: Indiana and Memphis

“I’m definitely going to visit Indiana,” the 6-foot-5 Cheek, a rising senior at St. Anthony in Jersey City, said during a community service event at Grant’s Tomb in Manhattan. “I’m definitely going to try to really look into that school and see how everything is.”

Indiana head coach Tom Crean recruited Cheek when he was at Marquette, and Crean also just hired former St. Anthony standout Roshown McLeod.

“Coach Crean, he was recruiting me when he was at Marquette and now he’s still recruiting me at Indiana,” Cheek said. “Roshown McLeod is like a brother figure to me. I knew him ever since I was little and me and his brother are like best friends, so that’s definitely going to play a big part.

“I know if I do decide to go out there, I’ll know that I’ll have a person to look out for me.”

Crean previously landed two St. Benedict’s players while at Marquette. Dwight Burke and David Cubillan both played at St. Ben’s for Dan Hurley, son of St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley.

Yet things did not go smoothly between Bob Hurley and Crean when the latter left for Indiana. Tyshawn Taylor had committed to Crean at Marquette, and Hurley then asked for his release when Buzz Williams was named Marquette’s new head coach. Taylor ended up at Kansas. Hurley would presumably have to give his blessing on Cheek’s final decision.

Cheek said he’s also considering “Memphis, Kansas, UConn, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Villanova, Wake Forest and Tennessee.”

“That’s probably the list I’m planning on cutting down soon,” Cheek said.

He added that he plans to visit Memphis.

“I’m definitely going to visit those two schools (Indiana and Memphis),” he said. “I’ve been to Seton Hall, I’ve been to Wake Forest and Villanova (and Rutgers).”

As for the game, he’s looking forward to playing with elite players John Wall and Kenny Boynton.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “This is my first year playing, so I’m trying to make the best of it by playing against the best players in the country.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with John Wall and Kenny Boynton.”
