Micah Thomas to Maryland

Micah Thomas, a 6-foot-8 senior small forward from Huntington Prep (W.V.), has committed to Maryland.

“They’re recruiting me pretty hard but they came pretty late,” Thomas said last month at the PrimeTime Shootout in New Jersey.

Thomas, whose long arms make him especially tough on defense, recently visited Louisville before the school announced its self-imposed postseason ban — and loved it. In the end, Maryland won out because “they were more consistent in recruiting Micah,” Huntington Prep coach Arkell Bruce said.

“He likes their player development,” Bruce said. “Coach [Mark] Turgeon and his staff effectively communicated their plan for Micah. His upside is tremendous. With development and consistent effort and patience, he will thrive there.”

Asked what he’s looking for at the next level, Thomas said: “I’m trying to fit in, get playing time.”

Thomas joins point guard Anthony Cowan and shooting guard Kevin Huerter in Maryland’s 2016 class.
