Recruiting Roundup: Terrance Ferguson Decommits from Alabama; St. John’s Visits Thon Maker

After weeks of speculation that it might happen, Terrance Ferguson officially decommitted from Alabama on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-7 Ferguson initially committed to Alabama on Aug. 17 after also considering Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, and North Carolina, among others.

“He’s opening back up his recruitment just based off of him losing his grandmother a month ago,” Advanced Prep International coach Ray Forsett told Scout.com. “He wants to make the right decision. He’s very much still interested in going to Alabama, but he wants to pray about it and make sure he’s making the right decision.”

Forsett said he expects Ferguson to be college-eligible.

“He’s taken classes from an approved school and we think he should be to be fine from the standpoint,” Forsett told Scout. “He’s done his part.”

Ranked the No. 2 shooting guard in the Class of 2016 by 247Sports.com, Ferguson was named to the Nike Hoop Summit and the McDonald’s All-American Game.

ST. JOHN’S VISITS THON MAKER

One day after Thon Maker announced plans for an official visit to Kansas this coming weekend, St. John’s assistant Barry “Slice” Rohrssen was on a flight to Toronto to visit with the uncommitted 7-footer.

Maker is considering Kansas, St. John’s, Arizona State, Indiana, Notre Dame and UNLV.

Rohrssen knows Maker and his guardian Ed Smith from his time as an assistant at Kentucky.

“It went well,” Smith told SNY.tv. “Slice watched a workout. He saw our championship game on-line [Monday] night and was really impressed with Thon scoring 18 points in the second quarter and 27 points for the win.

“He feels that his skillset will match well with [point guard] Marcus LoVett [who sat this season out as a partial qualifier]. They are still in the hunt for a couple of high-level perimeter guys at this stage.”

AARON THOMPSON VISITS VANDY

Aaron Thompson, a 6-foot-1 Class of 2017 point guard from Fairfax (VA) Paul VI, took an unofficial to Vanderbilt over the weekend.

“I really enjoyed it,” Thompson said. “Coach [Kevin] Stallings and coach [Adam] Cohen showed me a great time.”

Thompson has also taken unofficials to SMU, Temple, Nebraska and Virginia Tech.

“Aaron is a pure point with elite speed and vision/passing ability,” head coach Glenn Farello told SNY.tv. “He’s one of the best leaders we’ve ever had. He’s relentless on the defensive end. He’s added a consistent mid-range jump shot to his game this year.”
