Dashaun Wiggins to Seton Hall

Dashaun Wiggins, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound 2011 wing from Bridgton (Me.) Academy, has verbally committed to Seton Hall.

“Yes, a few minutes ago,” Wiggins, a Bronx native, said Saturday afternoon.

Wiggins chose Seton Hall over St. John’s, Hofstra, George Mason, Florida State and Arkansas.

Wiggins still has some academic work to do in order to qualify, according to sources.

“They seemed more interested in me,” Wiggins said, referring to Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez and assistant Dermon Player. “Bobby said he really wanted me and they said I could contribute.”

Wiggins has known Player since he was 11 years old and played for “Team Next.”

“I had a relationship with Derm even before he went to Seton Hall,” Wiggins said.

Wiggins, who transferred from Wings Academy in New York after averaging 19.4 points and 5.8 rebounds last season, is Seton Hall’s first 2011 commitment.

The Pirates have commitments from 2010 players Fuquan Edwin of Paterson Catholic and Jesse Morgan of South Kent (Conn.).

He said he left Wings in order focus on academics and basketball under head coach Whit Lesure.

“I transferred because everything was distracting me and I wanted to be focused,” he said. “I wanted to get better with my academics and my basketball so I just didn’t want to do anything else. I miss Wings Academy but it’s better for me.”

Said Lesure: “I think he’s a scoring guard. That’s what his game is hinged around. He scores off the dribble and off the catch. He’s a strong kid, he’s very athletic.  He’s a combo guard version of Omari Lawrence. He’s a physical guard.”

At Bridgton, Wiggins will play in the competitive NEPSAC league.

“It’s more competition. I wanted more competition,” he said.

Wiggins has visited Seton Hall unofficially and said he’s friendly with guards Jeremy Hazell and Jordan Theodore.

In two years, he will join the Pirates program.

“I’ll be a playmaker, a scorer, and a good teammate,” he said.
