  • Five-star guard Darryn Peterson has ‘awesome’ visit to Kansas: ‘They see Darryn as the face of the program’

    By ADAM ZAGORIA

Darryn Peterson, the five-star Class of 2025 shooting guard from Huntington Prep (WV), had an “awesome” visit to Kansas, his father told ZAGSBLOG.

“The visit was awesome,” Darryl Peterson said. “Coach [Bill] Self and his staff did an amazing job of laying out the plan they have for Darryn as far development and role he will play on the team as well as opportunities that going to a place with such rich basketball history like Kansas could afford a kid like Darryn. Very exciting.”

“They see Darryn as the face of the program.”

Peterson is working with a top eight of Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, Arkansas, Ohio State, Baylor, Indiana and Michigan. He took an official visit to Kentucky for Big Blue Madness in October.

Peterson is considered one of the top prospects in high school basketball regardless of class and a future NBA lottery pick.

“He’s a killer,” one NBA scout told ZAGSBLOG. “He’s my favorite to watch.

“And I like his approach. He goes hard at everyone.”

  • No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Duke go down, opening the door for Alabama

    BY ALEJANDRO LOPEZ

Two titans of college basketball went down Saturday night and No. 3 Alabama could be poised to become the new No. 1 team in the land.

No. 1 Auburn fell to No. 6 Florida, 90-81, snapping their 14-game winning streak and marking the second time Florida has taken down the top-anked team. The Gators beat Tennessee by 30 points last month.

This was Auburn’s first loss in the SEC this season.

The door then opened for No. 2 Duke to secure the top spot with a win against Clemson but they fell short, 77-71, snapping Duke’s 16-game win streak. Cooper Flagg, the presumed No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, hit two huge 3-pointers late to keep Duke in it, but ended up slipping on perspiration on the floor down the stretch as Duke could not come back.

The Clemson fans stormed the court after the upset.

No. 3 Alabama then took care of business at Arkansas, 85-81, for their sixth straight win, potentially opening up the door to taking over the No. 1 spot on Monday.

  • Kansas signee Darryn Peterson goes off for Prolific Prep in battle of top prospects

    By SAM LANCE

Kansas signee Darryn Peterson had a whopping 58 points to lead Prolific Prep past Utah Prep, 88-86, in Atlanta during the Grind Session on Saturday night. This battle featured the top-two prospects in the country in Peterson and BYU signee A.J. Dybantsa.

Peterson not only had 58 points, but he had the game-winning shot.

“That will go down as one of the best high school games and one of the best high school performances of all time,” Prolific Prep head coach Ryan Bernardi told ZAGSBLOG. “Great win for us.”

Prolific Prep has now beaten Utah Prep twice this season during the Grind Session. Dybantsa had 49 points in the loss for Utah Prep.

Peterson averaged 44.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game across his two games in Atlanta, per Trent Markwith. Peterson broke Prolific Prep’s single game scoring record with his 58 points on Saturday.

  • Michigan coach Dusty May responds to Indiana rumors

    BY ALEJANDRO LOPEZ

Fans at Indiana already have their eyes on a potential new coach but Dusty May doesn’t seem to be interested.

Indiana announced this week that Mike Woodson will not return next season, and May has been among several big names linked to the job.

“First of all, it’s flattering when you have the path that I had and have, I’m still on the same path, it makes you feel good because what’s your competitive advantages as a student manager [under Bob Knight at Indiana] that transferred in as a marginal Division II player,” May said after Michigan won at Indiana, 70-67. “You think back it’s like, man all I did was show up with great energy and passion for this game and helping people every day and because of that I think people always saw something or believed me and you get to this point.

“But that stuff is crazy. I love being at Michigan, I love our team, we are fighting like crazy, that’s it. This place is my foundation but I’m very, very happy at the University of Michigan.”

There may be nothing that May can do to completely dispel the rumors of him working at Indiana again but May made it clear that, for now at least, he is happy where he is.

“I love being at Michigan,” he said. “That hasn’t crossed my mind other than just what friends and family said and to be honest I’ve eliminated all of that.”

Indiana is amid a five-game skid while No. 24 Michigan has won their last four with a matchup against No. 7 Purdue on Feb. 11.

  • Uncommitted 2025 prospect Didi Zanguim ‘will be a pro’

    By SAM LANCE

Class of 2025 prospect Didi Zanguim is still searching for his college home. The 6-foot-10, 200-pound forward out of Good Vision Academy (TX) has had a productive high school season and is starting to garner interest from some notable Division I programs.

“I have a Division I offer from the University of New Orleans,” Zanguim told ZAGSBLOG. “And I’ve been talking to UNLV. The University of Akron reached out. Elon University and Southern University in Louisiana, those are the main schools that are on me the most. And LA Tech has been at my practice like twice, but I haven’t really talked to them lately.”

Zanguim recently had a few solid performances in Arizona. Against Hillcrest Prep (AZ), the forward tallied 20 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks and followed that up with a 18-point, seven-rebound performance against PHH Prep (AZ) in a 65-62 win.

UNLV was supposed to make an appearance for his games in Arizona but were unable because of its game against Boise State.

“They’ve been on me heavy,” Zanguim said of the Rebels. “They’ve been texting me, hitting me up, asking for some film…. They’ve been on me, watching me and liking my posts on Instagram and stuff like that.”

Zanguim — who has a 7-foot-7 wingspan — said he wants to sign during the spring period. Any program that gets him will be a lucky one, per his high school coach DJ Anderson.

“Didi is a rare blend of size, length and speed,” Anderson told ZAGSBLOG. “Outstanding timing on defense and runs like a guard. Still developing as a player physically and mentally giving him the rare chance to make money at the sport. As an ex pro, I can identify a future pro. Didi will be a pro.”

So far this season for Good Vision Academy, Zanguim has been the main factor and he describes himself as the leader of the team.

“I can do everything,” Zanguim said of his skillset. “I’m tall. I can block shots. I can rebound. I can push the ball at times. I can pass. I can finish around the rim pretty well. I have nice touch, to be honest I have the best touch in America. And I can do everything. Defend one-through-five, really anything to be honest…  I can score at anytime. If my team says they need a bucket, I will make sure to try and go get a bucket. I’m just a bucket getting. I’m somebody that they can rely on.”

Zanguim isn’t the only athlete in the family. His father, Henri Zanguim, played for Cameroon’s national basketball team. That’s where Zanguim is originally from, and he moved to the United States at a very young age. His father has taught him some valuable lessons about the game.

“To just be aggressive, ooze out confidence and just have fun,” Zanguim said. “He played the game so he understands. And he played at a very, very high level. He just told me to be humble. That’s the main thing is be humble and keep working. That’s all it is. It’s going to work out for me.”
