Thon Maker Planning Officials to St. John’s, Notre Dame

N

After meeting Monday with Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey and St. John’s assistant Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, 7-footer Thon Maker is planning to take officials to both schools although no dates have yet been finalized.

“It went well with Mike,” Ed Smith, Maker’s guardian, said of Brey. “He had a chance to watch a lot of Thon. He said he really wanted to get him to college and help him become more efficient in what he’s doing so he’s not floating as much. He has some things to help him with that, and they really think it’s going to be a lot of fun and they could be really a top team next year.

“It all depends on Demetrius Jackson, so that is something that’s big for them.

The 6-1 Jackson is a junior point guard projected as the No. 12 pick in the NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.

As for an official to Notre Dame, it might not come until April.

“Mike said, ‘Listen, you don’t have to come during a gametime,'” Smith said. “He said it could be sometime in April, so he’s fine with that.

As for St. John’s, Maker took an unofficial last month and the staff wants to get him back for an official relatively soon.

“Slice wants to do it a little more immediate [on an official],” Smith said. “So I’m just looking at a gap in our schedules….So I’m working through it right now.”

St. John’s would love to land Maker and/or Rawle Alkins to really blow out their 2016 recruiting class.

“Slice feels that they’re turning this thing around,” Smith said. “They’ve signed some good international kids, Richard Freudenberg and Yankuba Sima. He said St. John’s is really going hard after Rawle Alkins.”

Maker, who is also considering Arizona State, Indiana, Kansas and UNLV, is projected as the No. 30 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.
