Houston remains No. 1, Marquette up to No. 6, Kentucky re-enters latest AP Top 25 poll

By ROB ROSE

With a pair of blowout wins Houston held onto to its spot as No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

The Cougars have been in the top spot in the rankings for six weeks this season, second to Purdue who has been No. 1 seven times.

The Boilermakers were the only top 10 team that didn’t drop after a loss. Purdue stayed at No. 5 for the second straight week after a defeat vs. Indiana.

No. 13 Virginia saw the biggest decline of the top 10 teams after losses to Boston College and North Carolina after being ranked sixth last week.

No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Kansas stayed in the same spots after both teams picked up a pair of close wins. Marquette climbed up to No. 6 after No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 Arizona and No. 9 Texas all lost.

Gonzaga moved back into the top 10 after it spent a month outside following a loss to St. Mary’s. The No. 10 Bulldogs got their revenge against the No. 17 Gaels on Saturday night and moved up after the win.

A 3-game losing streak saw Iowa State fall out of the top 25. Creighton was also unranked after a pair losses to Marquette and Villanova.

No. 23 Kentucky moved back into the top 25 while it rode a 4-game win streak including an upset of No. 12 Tennessee. Pittsburgh also entered for the first time since 2016 and took the No. 25 spot ahead of a showdown with No. 16 Miami.
