Coach K makes first appearance at Duke game since retirement

By CHARLIE PARENT

The long awaited return of Mike Krzyzewski to Cameron Indoor Stadium finally happened Tuesday night when Duke hosted Notre Dame.

Irish coach Mike Brey, who will retire after the season, spent eight years as a Duke assistant under Coach K..

“It was a little weird, I must say, seeing him sit on the baseline,” Brey told reporters. “That was the calmest he’s ever been in the place.”

The legendary head coach was in the building for the first time since retiring after last season. He has been making the rounds lately. On Jan. 28, he saw several of his former players compete in the Nets-Knicks game at Barclays Center and he also watched St. Johns upset Providence on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

Krzyzewski, unlike former UNC legend Roy Williams, has made it clear he wants to take a very hands off approach in Duke’s post-Coach K era.

In June Krzyzewski told Jon Rothstein that he didn’t plan on seeing any games at Cameron Indoor this season, which didn’t come as a surprise to new head coach Jon Scheyer.

“You know, [the transition]‘s been real natural already,” Scheyer told SI.com. “And I already know I’m going to have to search Coach, you know, I’m gonna have to go find him to bring him back in the fold, you know? Coach has got a lot of things going on in his life, and of course, he wants to see our program succeed at the highest level possible, but I know he’s not gonna be just hovering around. He’s gonna live his life.”
