Sherrod Wright to Visit Xavier, Georgia Tech

Mount Vernon senior guard Sherrod Wright will visit Xavier and Georgia Tech in September “for sure,” head coach Bob Cimmino said.

The 6-4, 190-pound Wright is the No. 30 shooting guard in the Class of 2009, according to Rivals.  Virginia, Providence and Cincinnati are also in the mix, Cimmino said.

When asked about Xavier, Wright told Musketeerscoop.com, “Their coaches keep in contact all the time. They are either in touch with my coach or in touch with my pops. They have just been in constant contact.”

About Georgia Tech, Wright said, “Georgia Tech, they are my style of play. They fast break a lot, and run some half court stuff, but they get out and go a lot. They let everybody attack and look to score. They are a guard oriented team that also throws it down low to the big guys.”

Wright averaged 19 points for a Mount Vernon team that also featured current West Virginia freshman Kevin Jones and finished 23-4.

Yet his immediate future at Mount Vernon is in doubt because the school district must raise $950,000 to keep its interscholastic sports program going; this is because the people in Mount Vernon voted to reject two budget proposals put forth by the district earlier this year. The freshman football team has already been axed.

“We’re going season by season,” Cimmino said. “We got the go-ahead for varsity and JV sports in the fall. We’re doing some fundraising on winter.”

The program recently held a “Ben Gordon Weekend” in an effort to raise funds for the basketball program, but Cimmino said the “totals haven’t come in.”

Wright has been active in fundraising because he realizes that he could be faced without a team to play for if the money isn’t raised.

Cimmino hopes to maintain modified freshman, JV and varsity teams for the upcoming season.

“I’m hoping they keep them all,” Cimmino said.
