Cam and Cayden Boozer aren’t rushing to a college commitment

By JACOB POLACHECK

ATLANTACam and Cayden Boozer aren’t rushing to make a college decision.

The twins out of Christopher Columbus (FL) High School, have offers from a gamut of high-major programs, including Duke, Arkansas, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Florida State, Memphis, FIU and Arkansas State, among others.

As the sons of two-time NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer, who won a national championship with Duke in 2001, many have speculated that the duo is bound to end up in Durham. However, as reported by ZAGSBLOG in October, the twins are not locks to follow their dad’s path to Duke.

“I’m just taking it slow,” Cam said in an interview. “I’m not really worried about that right now. I’m still pretty young, so I’m just taking my time and making sure I’m looking at all my options.”

Cayden issued a similar sentiment to his brother, taking advice from his father.

“The advice my dad has given me is to just take my time on it, not try to rush to commit,” Cayden said. “View my options and make sure I make the right decision for me.”

Despite taking the recruitment slowly, the first step in the process may be coming soon.

“There are some [visits] I’m thinking about, but for now, I’m going to focus on our season first,” Cam said.

So far, the twins have taken one unofficial visit this college basketball season, checking in to see the University of Florida on November 11.

While their recruitment may just now be ramping up, their games have been in the spotlight for quite some time. Exposed to the game of basketball since childhood, Cam and Cayden are just now starting to realize their potential.

With five seconds remaining in the 2022 Florida 7A boys basketball state championship game, Cayden stood at the free throw line with the game tied at 44. Going 1-for-2 from the line, Boozer gave Columbus the lead. Just a few seconds later, the final buzzer goes off and The Explorers complete their 28-2 season with the school’s first ever state championship.

“That’s probably one of the biggest moments I’ve had so far,” Cayden said. “It was a really good experience to see our fans so excited for us.”

Fast forward to December of 2022 and Cam and Cayden are heralded as two of the nation’s best prospects.

On3Sports currently has Cam ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the class of 2025, while Cayden comes in at No. 15.

“It’s nice to look at, but at the end of the day, those rankings don’t really matter,” Cam said. “I still have to come on the court and perform every night. It’s just a day-by-day thing of getting better and improving my game.”

Cayden, standing at 6-foot-3, 190-pound, is a big guard that can play multiple spots on the floor. He’s an impressive defender on-the-ball with a high basketball IQ.

Meanwhile, Cam, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward, prides himself on an ability to guard all positions on the floor.

“I’m a guy who just brings versatility to a team,” Cam said. “I can defend one through five. I can rebound. I can push up the court. I feel like I’m a good piece to any team and I can do whatever it takes to win.

To understand how the twins have been able to attain their status as two of the top prospects in the nation, you have to go all the way back to their time playing at the Boys and Girls Club at the age of five.

“I didn’t really take the game that seriously,” Cam said. “I was just playing, having fun out there, doing my thing and enjoying the game. I was high-fiving the crowd. It was fun. Every game is a memory in basketball, so it’s just amazing.”

By the time the twins reached middle school, basketball became more of a priority as they saw some of the nation’s top prospects earn immense recognition from college coaches.

“I’d see all these guys like Jalen Green get all these offers and I’d be like, oh, I want those,” Cayden said. “It’s definitely a good experience to have these at such a young age.”

Years and years of playing together has resulted in a chemistry nearly unmatched by any duo in high school basketball.

“We just know where each other are at all times since we’ve been playing so long,” Cayden said.

Still, as their recruitment heats up, Cayden and Cam may have to reckon with the fact that their paths may diverge at the next level.

“I would definitely love to be a package deal, but it’s probably not realistic just due to the fits,” Cayden said. “We might not have the same fit for each college. It would definitely be a great experience if we could.”
