Baptiste to St. Joe’s; College Notes

Mayo**Carl Baptise, a 6-8 junior forward from North Hunterdon High School, has given an oral commitment to St. Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli. Baptiste was named an Underclass All-Star last summer at the Eastern Invitational. He was also being recruited by La Salle, Temple and Delaware.

**Villanova associate head coach Brett Gunning has taken his name out of consideration for the Marist vacancy.

**NJIT will introduce former Columbia assistant Jim Engles as its new head coach at 2 p.m. today. NJIT went 0-29 last year and we certainly wish Engles the best of luck turning it around.

**O.J. Mayo of USC (above), Joe Alexander of West Virginia and Donte Green of Syracuse will go pro. Mayo is leaving USC after his freshman season and plans to hire an agent, while Alexander and Green haven’t signed with agents and could return to campus.

**Memphis’s John Calipari was named Naismith National Coach of the Year for the second time.
