Class of 2022 wing Chris Watson commits to Miami

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Christian Watson, the 6-foot-6 wing from St. Johns (DC) and DC Premier AAU, has committed to Miami.

Ranked the No. 27 small forward in 2022 by 247Sports.com, he also considered Georgetown and Marquette..

“This is a huge recruiting year for Miami as they’re losing a lot of guys,” he said of his recent visit. “They see me stepping up right away filling in a huge role. They really love my game and believe I can develop really well there to get to that next level.”

Miami first saw him play earlier this summer.

“Coach (Jim) Larrañaga and Coach (Chris) Caputo at UMiami first saw me play virtually at the Southern Jam Fest this year while they were recruiting two other kids I was going up against. After that game, they fell in love with my game and the way that I can play any position on the floor also creating for others. UMiami is a great program in one of the best conferences at the college level playing against the best of the best every night.”

St. John’s High School coach Pat Behan said the Hurricanes are getting a special talent.

“Christian has fantastic upside at the next level,” he said. “His willingness to improve all facets of his game in high school bodes well for his trajectory. Christian has good length and athleticism to be a factor in the open court.

“Christian has tremendous versatility on both ends of the floor. He can be used as a primary ball handler that comes off ball screens, while also being an aggressive attacker and playmaker from the wing. Each year he’s added range to his jump shot and while off the ball, he can space the floor in the half court.

“Defensively, Christian can guard multiple positions and will be able to switch screens effectively. From the guard spot, Christian should be a very impactful presence on the glass.”
