Oklahoma sophomore guard De’Vion Harmon will miss at least the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament after testing positive for COVID-19, head coach Lon Kruger announced Wednesday.
“De’Vion has tested positive [for COVID],” Kruger said in a virtual press conference Wednesday. “So we’ll be without De’Vion.”
Harmon, the Sooners’ second-leading scorer, has averaged 12.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season.
The 6-foot-2, 198-pound point guard from Denton, Texas, scored only six points OU’s last game as the Sooners fell 69-62 to Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament.
“He’s had a great year,” Kruger said. “Made tremendous progress. Players have this as a goal, to play in the NCAA Tournament. So it’s so sad for De’Vion. Just heartbroken that he’s not gonna have that opportunity this first weekend.
“So we challenged our guys to win a couple, I guess, so he can get back for the second weekend. But a lot of work ahead for that, for sure. But yeah, disappointed for De’Vion that he won’t be with us.”
Although details of Harmon’s test have not been disclosed, Kansas has been dealing with COVID-19 problems of its own, withdrawing from the Big 12 Tournament just one day following its matchup with Oklahoma.
While KU junior forward David McCormack and sophomore forward Tristan Enaruna missed the Oklahoma game due to COVID-19 protocols, redshirt freshman forward Jalen Wilson played 33 minutes in the KU win.
Wilson tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, which led to Kansas’ withdrawal from the Big 12 Tournament.
No. 8 seed Oklahoma is set to face No. 9 seed Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 6:25 p.m. Saturday at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis.
