Rutgers Football Players Report for Camp

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Rutgers football team reported today ahead of the start of tomorrow’s camp. Here are a few quick notes from head coach Greg Schiano:

**OL Keith Newell transferred to Delaware State.

**Davon Smart, a DB out of Hackensack, N.J., transferred to Norfolk State. He has one year of eligibility left.

**Defensive end Gary Watts will pursue his degree but won’t play football because of a knee injury.

**Tight end Marquis Hamm has opted to “give up football.”

**6-1, 185-pound cornerback Darrell Givens, a four-star recruit according to Rivals, was admitted to Rutgers after failing to get into Penn State. He is fully qualified.

“You’re not allowed to come to a Big East school and play football unless you’re a full qualifier, so he’ll be eligible to practice and play,” Schiano said.

Asked if he would be behind, Schiano said: “Darrell’s a guy that we recruited very early on. We were his first offer and we’ve had a good relationship with him and I think he’ll pick up pretty quickly.

“He’ s a good player. This is a very good recruiting class that’s coming in. Having said that, they’ve done nothing at the colelge level, so Darrell along with the rest of them, they’ve got a lot to learn.”

**Anthony Davis reported at 325 pounds and hopes to get down to 315 by the season opener.

“I’ll be playing at 315,” he said.

**Tight end Paul Carrezola has “a little bit of a hamstring” and won’t be ready to  start camp.

**WR Mohamed Sanu “is a little cloudy right now” after bumping heads with a teammate over the summer and also isn’t ready to play.

**Running back Kordell Young will participate in “individual” drills and Schiano hopes he’s ready for the team’s second scrimmage. Schiano previously said Young was “limited” because of a reoccurence of an injury to his surgically-repaired knee.

**The coach has no timetable on deciding who the team’s QB will be. “The sooner, the better,” he said. He emphasized that the decision will be based on each’s players “complete body of work.” That includes the spring for everyone except true freshman Tom Savage.
