Iona announces second COVID shutdown

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Iona announced its second COVID shutdown on Tuesday following a positive test from a Tier-1 individual associated with the men’s basketball team.

Earlier in the day, Rick Pitino’s club announced its game with Towson had been canceled after that program had a positive test.

Iona (5-3, 3-1 MAAC) had a COVID pause to start the season and played its first game at Seton Hall Nov. 30.

The Gaels are next slated to play Saint Peter’ Jan. 15-16.

Pitino said before the season began he supported pushing the start of the season back until March and having “May Madness” for the NCAA Tournament.

UConn has also had two separate COVID pauses and is due to play its next game Wednesday against DePaul after having had five games this month postponed or canceled.
