Payton Sandfort commits to Iowa

By JACOB POLACHECK

Class of 2021 forward Payton Sandfort has committed to Iowa, per his Twitter.

The 6-foot-8, 200-pound small forward from Waukee (IA) Senior, chose the Hawkeyes over Stanford, Utah, Air Force, Drake, Minnesota and Loyola-Chicago.

“Payton is a tremendous shooter at 6’8 and very skilled,” said Waukee Senior head coach Justin Ohl. “His passing ability at his size along with his versatility is a great fit for Coach [Fran] McCaffery’s program. ”

Ranked by 247Sports.com as the No. 26 small forward nationally, Sandfort becomes the first commit in the Hawkeyes 2021 recruiting class.

As a junior, Sandfort averaged 19.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, shooting 53 percent from the field. He also shot 47 percent from three-point range, helping lead the Warriors to a state runner-up finish in Class 4A.
