Martin to Marist

Chuck_martinMemphis assistant Chuck Martin will be named the new head coach at Marist, according to Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News.

Martin, a former point guard at Monmouth, was hired by John Calipari to join the Tigers in September 2006 after serving on Norm Roberts’ initial staff at St. John’s. Martin began his college coaching career at Manhattan College, where he was an assistant to current Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez.

The Marist job opened up when Matt Brady left to take over at James Madison. St. Benedict’s Prep head coach Dan Hurley turned down the Marist job over the weekend, as first reported by ZAGSBLOG.

With Martin’s departure, we wonder how this might impact the recruitment of both Devin Ebanks and Lamont “Momo” Jones, both of whom have strong relationships with Martin, a St. Raymond High School product. Ebanks is considering Memphis, West Virginia, Rutgers and Texas, while Jones, who de-committed from Louisville, is looking at Memphis, Pitt and Xavier among others.
