After picking up an offer from Tulsa on Wednesday, Class of 2022 forward Shawn Jones Jr. continues to collect college offers.
Jones, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound small forward from Shadow Creek (TX) High School, currently holds offers from Tulsa, Houston, LSU, Rice, McNeese State and TCU. He broke down each school for ZAGSBLOG:
Tulsa: “They really want me and they think I can be the guy down there. They’ve been telling me more about the school and about who they play.”
Houston: “I talked to coach [Kelvin] Sampson and he was very interested in keeping me in the city. It takes a strong person and a person that really loves the city to stay here. He was talking to me about how they can make me a better player and person all-around.”
LSU: “Coach Will Wade had great energy on the phone and was telling me about how they also love me down there and how they want me. They talked about how their fan base is so big and they’re excited to recruit me.
Rice: “They’ve been recruiting me for a long time and really like me.”
McNeese State: “McNeese’s coach came to my school. They offered me in the middle of last year and they just talk about how they really want me there.”
TCU: “I didn’t have a long conversation with TCU’s coach. It was quick, but he’s going to get back to me one of these days.
Jones has also received interest from Texas, Texas Tech, Oral Roberts, UTSA and Wichita State.
“[Texas Tech] is probably one of the most interesting schools,” Jones said. They’ve been recruiting me since last year and were on me every day about how they want me, want me to get better and how they won’t leave my recruiting process.”
Jones is set to talk to Creighton’s coaching staff sometime within the week.
With two years left in high school, Jones says he’s “not really focused” on making a decision at the moment.
“Probably around senior year, but if it comes to the point when I get close enough to a school around my junior year then I’ll make my decision,” he said. “Right now, I’m more focused on making a decision my senior year.”
Jones says he’s looking at a number of factors when evaluating his college choices.
“The main factor for me is whether they will make me and my family feel comfortable,” Jones said. “I’m also looking at if they’re going to look out for us and if they’re going to make me a better person.”
With the coronavirus pandemic, recruits have been unable to make college visits, but Jones says he hopes to take visits to TCU and LSU in the fall.
On the court, Jones describes his game as “smooth and energetic”.
“My style of play is really aggressive,” he said. “I’m going to play defense the full game. To me, offense just comes naturally based on how much I work on shooting the ball and all that.”
