After Oklahoma State gets postseason ban, Cade Cunningham could be a free agent

By JACOB POLACHECK

After Oklahoma State was hit with a postseason ban for the 2020-21 season on Friday, Cade Cunningham may suit up elsewhere next season.

“We’re going to have conversations over the next few days, probably weeks, and look at all the options whatever they are: G-League, overseas, other universities, stay at Oklahoma State,” Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton said Friday. ““At the end of the day whatever his family and he decide is best, I’m going to get in tow with that and I’m going got support it 100 percent.”

The penalties are the result of a Level I violation involving former associate head coach Lamont Evans.

Oklahoma State will appeal the NCAA’s ruling. The deadline for filing the appeal is June 20.

Cunningham, who is projected by ESPN.com as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, was also considering Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina and Washington before ultimately committing to Oklahoma State in November.

“I tell you what I told him: I didn’t spend four years recruiting him and telling him how much I cared about him to abandon what’s important for him,” Boynton said.

Oklahoma State currently has the No. 10 ranked recruiting class in the nation, per 247Sports.

“I’m not going let any player get screwed in this process,” Boynton said. “Any player who stays with this program will do it with their eyes wide open.”
