NCAA extends recruiting dead period through July 31

By JACOB POLACHECK

The NCAA has has extended the recruiting dead period through July 31.

“The extension maintains consistent recruiting rules for all sports and allows coaches to focus on the student-athletes who may be returning to campus,” NCAA Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania said. “The committee is committed to reviewing the dead period again in late June or early July.”

This decision comes two weeks after the NABC and the WBCA recommended that the NCAA dead period be pushed back.

The dead period previously ran through June 30.

With the dead period extension, Peach Jam, the crown jewel of the recruiting period, will likely not happen in July, although Nike has yet to make an official announcement.

The Peach Jam, the finals of the Nike EYBL circuit, was previously scheduled for July 8-12 in North Augusta, S.C.

This is the second time the recruiting dead period has been pushed back. On April 1, the recruiting dead period was pushed back to May 31.

“As time has gone on and more and more information has been gained, it’s clear that we need to look at the future opportunities to create alternative events going forward in August, September and October possibly,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon told Andy Katz of the NCAA earlier this month. “Those being scholastic and non-scholastic, so we love recruiting in July. We were looking forward to the Academies in June at the four different sites, but we have to adjust.”

He added: “I have great hope that we’ll get to see the kids and that the kids will be seen.”
