Duke’s Matthew Hurt to return for sophomore year

By JACOB POLACHECK

Duke freshman Matthew Hurt will return to Duke for his sophomore year, he announced Thursday via Instagram.

“I hope everyone is staying safe in these tough times and practicing social distancing,” Hurt wrote in a statement released via Instagram. “With that being said I’ll be returning for my sophomore year at Duke. Let’s run it back DUKE NATION💙😈.”

As a freshman, Hurt averaged 9.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.7 blocks per game in 31 games played. Hurt started in 21 games and averaged 20.5 minutes per game.

Hurt shot 48.7 percent from the field and a remarkable 39.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc on the season.

Before announcing his return, Hurt was listed by ESPN as the No. 78 best available prospect in the 2020 Draft.

Duke is already losing freshman forward Vernon Carey Jr. who declared for the NBA Draft earlier this month.
