MRI confirms UConn’s Akok Akok has ruptured Achilles

By ADAM ZAGORIA

UConn announced Monday that an MRI revealed redshirt freshman forward Akok Akok suffered a ruptured left Achilles in Sunday’s win over Memphis.

Surgery to repair the damage will be scheduled within the next day or two, the school announced.

After the injury, Akok was helped back onto the court while wearing a boot on his foot and walking with crutches. He remained on the bench to watch UConn pull out a 64-61 victory and support his teammates.

“It was a big win, obviously, but there’s no joy in it when something like that happens in the first minute,” UConn coach Dan Hurley told reporters. “Sports is brutal sometimes. Life is brutal sometimes.

The 6-foot-9 freshman is averaging 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Huskies.
