Rasheem Dunn immediately eligible at St. John’s

The NCAA has granted redshirt junior guard Rasheem Dunn a Legislative Relief Waiver, making the Brooklyn native immediately eligible to play for the Red Storm.

“We’re thrilled that the NCAA has made this decision and given a fine young man the opportunity to pursue his dreams,” said St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson.  “Rasheem has always done things the right way and we’re very excited and appreciative that the NCAA has ruled in his favor.”

“I appreciate all the support I have received from St. John’s,” said Dunn. “I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity. It was worth the wait.”

The waiver, which was originally denied by the NCAA, was reconsidered after new evidence was presented in Dunn’s favor.

Dunn sat out last season as a transfer at Cleveland State, where he left following a coaching change during the summer.

Dunn played his first two years of college basketball locally at St. Francis Brooklyn, where he tallied 855 points in 60 games.  As a freshman, he set the program’s NEC-era rookie scoring record with 394 points before leading the team and ranking 10th in the conference with 15.4 points per outing as a sophomore.  He also paced the team in rebounding (5.7 rpg) and steals (1.8 spg) while ranking second on the team in assists with 2.3 per contest.

During that second season with the Terriers, he anchored them to an eight-win improvement in conference play alone.

A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and former teammate of Shamorie Ponds, Dunn captained the Orange Wave to their first PSAL title in more than 60 years and a New York State Class AA Federation Championship as a senior in 2015-16.  Dunn scored 23 points in the city championship game at Madison Square Garden, earning Co-MVP honors alongside Ponds.

Dunn will make his debut with the Red Storm on Saturday against Vermont at Carnesecca Arena.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. on FS2.
