The NCAA has denied St. John’s request for a legislative relief waiver for guard Rasheem Dunn, a source said Sunday morning.
A second source at St. John’s said the school is still involved in the “process” of trying to obtain Dunn’s waiver and could not comment.
St. John’s guard Mustapha Heron reacted on Twitter:
sat out a whole year and because he wanted to goto a place that he felt was better for himself and his family he gets punished? Just think about how outlandish that sounds. yall are supposed to be in the business of helping kids not hindering them #FreeRahDunn til it’s backwards! https://t.co/C4P85hDBKI

The New York Post first reported Dunn had been denied his waiver.
St. John’s is now 0-for-2 on waiver attempts, having missed on Ian Steere, whose waiver “appears to be headed to appeal,” a source told me on Friday.
A 6-2 combo guard who played with former St. John’s star Shamorie Ponds at Thomas Jefferson High School, Dunn transferred to Cleveland State in May of 2018, only to see head coach Dennis Felton fired in July of this year.
Dunn averaged 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds two seasons ago at St. Francis.
Without Dunn, St. John’s point guard situation would be cloudy, with sophomore Greg Williams and Monmouth transfer Nick Rutherford in the mix.
Freshman guard John McGriff had successful shoulder surgery this past week and the school plans to apply for a redshirt.
