Rhody lands JUCO wing Devale Johnson

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Rhode Island has landed a commitment from junior college wing Devale “DJ” Johnson.

The 6-foot-7, 185-pound Johnson averaged 13.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks at Williston State College, while shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc.

“I chose Rhode Island because on my visit it felt like home and it was a tightknit family environment,” he said. “The entire staff was great. It’s the best place to help me develop and become not only a better player but a better student and man.

“Rhode Island wins. Coach [David] Cox is winner and with the talent already on the team, plus what I bring, we will win.”

Johnson also visited St. John’s, St. Joe’s and Albany.

“I’ll compete night in and night out,” he said. “I can knock down shots, rebound and defend at a high level.”

He joins shooting guard Gregory Hammond and wings Mehki Long and Jacob Toppin in Rhody’s 2019 class.
