The big spring for Seton Hall junior guard Myles Powell continues.
The 6-foot-2 Powell on Tuesday won the Haggerty Award as the best player in the New York metropolitan area. Powell, who averaged 23.1 points per game, beat out St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds and Hofstra guard Justin Wright-Foreman, among others. All three were named to named first-team All-Met.
Powell is the third Seton Hall player to win the award in the last four years, following Angel Delgado (2017) and Isaiah Whitehead (2016), and the 13th Seton Hall Player overall to win it. Ponds won it in 2018 and two other St. John’s players won recently — D’Angelo Harrison (2014) and Sir’Dominic Pointer (2015).

Powell has also hired agent Sam Permut and will attend the G League Elite Camp in Chicago next month, he told ZAGSBLOG.
“It’s a win-win situation.”

Powell announced recently he will test the NBA Draft process. He is not projected to be drafted, but will have several NBA workouts coming up. Powell has until May 29 to decide if he wants to return to campus for his senior season.
Now he will get a chance among 40 college prospects at the G League Elite Camp May 12-14, just before the NBA combine starting May 15. As ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported, the top five performers from this camp will be invited to the regular NBA Combine starting May 15. Ponds, Yale guard Miye Oni and LSU and former Roselle (N.J.) Catholic big man Naz Reid are among those invited to the regular combine.
“Let’s go through the draft process, the NBA will let you know if you are ready,” Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard told Bruce Beck of NBC earlier this month. “I’m praying for him to be back.”
Meantime, Willard was named the co-Coach of the Year along with Hofstra’s Joe Mihalich by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. Willard led Seton Hall to its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance despite losing four senior starters to graduation off last year’s team. He flirted with Virginia Tech before opting to remain at Seton Hall, where his team is a projected top-25 outfit in the preseason.
