Williams to Arizona; Holy Cross Down to 2

Sean Miller continues to light up the recruiting trail in his first season on the job in Arizona.

Miller landed a verbal commitment Sunday from Derrick Williams, a 6-foot-7 forward from La Mirada, Calif., who initially committed to USC.

“Yeah I did,” Williams wrote by text.

Williams visited Arizona late last week and ultimately chose the Wildcats over Arizona State, Gonzaga and Memphis. He had visited Memphis earlier in the week.

Williams is one of eight recruits to leave USC. Head coach Tim Floyd resigned in the wake of the O.J. Mayo scandal.

The Williams signing would appear to take Arizona firmly out of the Lance Stephenson mix. Stephenson, as first reported on ZAGSBLOG, could be headed to Cincinnati.

Williams joins a five-man recruiting class at Arizona that includes New York guards Kevin Parrom and Lamont “Momo” Jones; Los Angeles small forward Solomon Hill; and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy center Kyryl Natyazhko.

Like Williams, Jones and Hill also initially committed to Southern Cal.

HOLY CROSS DOWN TO 2

Holy Cross is down to two candidates for its head coaching job, according to FoxSports.com.

Either Notre Dame associate head coach Sean Kearney or Pittsburgh associate head coach Tom Herrion will get the job vacated by Ralph Willard, according to the report.

Kearney will interview with Holy Cross AD Richard Regan on Monday and Herrion on Tuesday, and Regan could decide by Wednesday.

  • table scraps

  • Sour grapes from pasta

  • So, pasta’s opinion of Williams has changed yet again? Why does that not surprise me?

  • AZ,

    The TRUTH is coming out.
About how CaliCat did or didn’t clear room on the UK roster.

    Anything go add Memphis………….

“Memphis and if it is, he knows the first team he wants to play.

Speaking to a group of reporters in Memphis last weekend, Pilgrim said if he winds up at the school he hopes the Tigers schedule Kentucky.

UK announced Pilgrim was leaving the team three weeks ago. According to Pilgrim, the decision was made after a meeting with John Calipari.

“He just gave me a choice…to sit the bench or go somewhere and play. So, you know he basically gave me a choice but it wasn’t really a choice at the same time,” Pilgrim said.

According to Pilgrim, Calipari didn’t give him a reason why he didn’t think he could play at Kentucky but did tell the 6’8 forward that he has the ability to make it to the NBA if he puts in the work.

“I told him I was willing to work hard, but I guess it wasn’t convincing enough,” Pilgram said.

Pilgrim never played a game for the Cats. He sat out last year after transferring from Hampton.

Even though he never suited up for UK, Pilgrim’s reputation with fans grew as stories circulated about his play in practice.

“That’s definitely accurate, that’s why I’m surprised I’m still not there” Pilgrim said of rumors that he gave Patrick Patterson everything he could handle in practice last year.

Pilgrim is expected to have to sit out this year because he’s again seeking a transfer but he’s hoping the NCAA will grant him eligibility.

“It was out of my control so I hope they realize what happened and realize my situation and how unique it is and just make a right decision on my behalf.”

I’ve changed my mind ….Williams will be a Tiger …. no need for him to go to a program on the skids ….just to be closer to home .

    WHAT A RETARD PASTABOY IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Looks like Memphis will get Pilgrim ….he’s twice as good as Williams

  • with memphis getting pilgrim, all we get is depth. at a spot we already have plenty of depth at. he would be a great acquistion for the upcoming season, and will contribute in his own ways. he will be more of a factor in 2010 tho. even if he has to sit out, we should still be a top 20 team this year, and in 2010 a top 10 team. don’t count out the tigers yet. we are coming back with a vengenence.

  • Pilgrim is HAMPTON’S table scraps… Where is Hampton, anyway???

  • Good GET for Matt P.
Ugly events which transpired with Cali and UK.
    Very ugly.

But, ARIZONA has just pulled in the BEST , NO.1 recruiting class for the PAC10.

And one of the main reason is…Miller.

The 2009 recruits for the UofA are all TOP100 players.
ucla had the top spot; but, the Wildcats took it over.
(ucla has two key 09 recruits injuired in Honey and Nelson.)

    Check it out.
