Akok Akok to UConn, will enroll in January

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Akok Akok, who withdrew from Putnam Science (CT) in order to enroll in college, announced his commitment to UConn on Saturday.

Because he is one year removed from his graduating class, the 6-foot-10 Akok is eligible for the 2019 NBA Draft, but chose to enroll at UConn next month. He is expected to practice this season but not play in games.

Akok chose UConn over Georgetown, Providence, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. UConn coach Dan Hurley and his staff have been heavily pursuing Akok and now will add a big man to their roster for the 2019-20 season.

“I feel I can picture myself going to UConn,” Akok told reporters at the National Prep Showcase. “It’s a great school, it would be a great situation where I could stay at home and contribute.”

“They said I could come in and be a big contributor,” he added, “and that I could change the team and bring the team different places and help them win a national championship.”

Akok will attend the Arizona-UConn game on Sunday in Hartford.

“It’s a great Pickup,” said UConn-bound guard James Bouknight, who will also be in attendance Sunday. “He’s a game-changer. a player who could stretch the floor with his 3-point shooting, get to the rim and block shots with his athleticism.

“Coach Hurley is really turning the program around.”
