Rose Comments on Gang Sign Picture

Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose issued a statement about the photo circulating of him allegedly making gang signs.

“Recently, a photo has been circulating on the Internet which appears to depict me flashing a gang sign. This photo of me was taken at a party I attended in Memphis while I was in school there, and was meant as a joke…a bad one, I now admit. I want to emphatically state, now and forever, that Derrick Rose is anti-gang, anti-drug, and anti-violence. I am not, nor have I ever been, affiliated with any gang and I can’t speak loudly enough against gang violence, and the things that gangs represent.

“In posing for this picture, I am guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment. I sincerely apologize to all my fans for my mistake. I pride myself on being a good citizen, and role model, that young people can look up to and I want to urge all my young fans to stay away from gangs and gang-related activities.”

This statement sure looks like someone at the Bulls wrote it for him, but what else is new?

Rose, who spent one year at Memphis under John Calipari before going pro, allegedly had someone take his SAT for him as well.

But he has yet to comment on that.

  • AZ,

It either came from the Bulls PR or WWW PR network.
Either way, another bad reflection on Memphis?

Did Memphis even make it to the clean- playboy party schools?
playboy does not accept gang related schools.

Looks like UK has that CIRCUS now…..Josh appears to be a clean person.
    Cali, on the otherhand…

    But, on a serious NOTE.

    The Count DOWN…THREE WEEKS.

Yes, three weeks before the NCAA issues its penalities.
If the NCAA punished Alabama for some money “taken” in the $2200.00 range.
Then, Memphis is GUILTY of this as well, in many areas.
And this is ONLY ONE Memphis wrongdoing…

Thus, MEMPHIS will get much TOUGHER penalities.
The NCAA is not fouling around and WILL NEED TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF MEMPHIS, for sure.

It the NCAA take MORE than three WEEKS;then, the PENALITIES will be severe!

what is your take on the Memphis penalities?

And will UK become the next NCAA target???because of Cali.

  • Since we’re talking about penalties when is the NCAA going to nail the USC Trojans for football and basketball? Their football program was the best that $$$ could buy (just ask the Bushes). And Tim Floyd: what’s embarassing isn’t that he was spotted handing out $$$ like candy to a runner, but that with all that talent they didn’t win jack$hit!

  • Well the Trojans did win a Pac Ten Tournament in men’s b-ball didn’t they? But what a sad situation. Throw away a job and possibly a career over a $1,000 payout to get a kid for one season? It’s not like he was the “missing piece” that was going to win USC a national championship like Carmelo was to Syracuse. And don’t get it twisted, I’m not saying SU did anything illegal to get Carmelo, just making the comparison between two one-and-doners and the different results.

  • He is apparently NOT anti-cheating however. Thanks for clearing that up DRose.

  • how ironic…a usc fan constantly posting his expert analysis, bashing memphis for a player cheating on his sat long before attending the university. how about enlightening us with some real dirt? like the continuing implosion that is usc basketball? heh, might as well include the football program as well.

  • DRose has made some mistakes like all of us have. I’m a white guy from a small town and if I think back I have probably thrown a couple of gang signs, just horsing around. Nobody would say anything if he weren’t in the national spotlight and a black guy to boot. Had this been a white kid, it wouldn’t have been strung along this much, or been mentioned at all for that fact. Let it go. Zagoria, thoughts about that?

And the SAT stuff hasn’t been proven. Not saying he didn’t do it or that he did, but I’m pretty sure I live in a country that is ‘innocent until proven guilty’.

Regardless of what happens with our program, he is still one heck of a player and will do nothing but get better and better each year. He has the talent and skill to be one of the best all around players ever. That my friends is the truth.

  • (Not a facetious comment)

Don’t be fooled my USC.trojan’s screen name. He is really and Arizona fan (from what he has stated several times), don’t ask me why or how, I dont know. I do know that his comments seem* to always have a hint of ‘flame’ to them.
