Duke’s R.J. Barrett scores 14 as Canada routs Dominican Republic

Incoming Duke freshman R.J. Barrett went for 14 points and 6 rebounds on Friday as the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team defeated the Dominican Republic 97-61 in a FIBA Americas qualifier at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.

With the win, both Canada and Dominican are 4-1 in their qualifying games going into their second matchup in phase 3.

Four Canadian players ended in double-digits in the win:  Barrett, Melvin Ejim, Dillon Brooks and Kelly Olynyk all finished with 14 points, along with Olynyk leading the team with 9 rebounds.

Going into the fourth Canada found themselves leading 65-54.  Canada’s lead stretched to as far as 36 in the final quarter of the game, giving them a cushion that would hold them to an eventual 97-61 victory against the Dominican Republic.

The 6-foot-7 Barrett is the projected No.1  pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and part of Duke’s No. 1 recruiting class that also includes projected Top 10 picks Cam Reddish and Zion Williamson.
