Local Coaches on the Hot Seat

Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com has issued a list of 12 Division 1 basketball coaches on the hot seat and four of them are from the New York-metropolitan area, including all three Big East coaches.

Here’s what Jeff had to say about Norm Roberts, Fred Hill, Bobby Gonzalez and Derrick Whitteburg. What are your thoughts on these coaches?

3. Norm Roberts

Goodman: Roberts is one of the best guys around, but he has yet to crack the top 10 in the Big East in his five years at the helm. The Red Storm are 21 games under .500 in his tenure and don’t appear to have a legitimate shot at signing local standout Lance Stephenson.

5. Dereck Whittenburg

Goodman: The Rams coach has virtually nothing going for him these days. He lost his second-best player, Mike Moore, and his best player, Jio Fontan, is leaving despite the school’s flat-out refusal to release him. Fordham finished 12th in the A-10 two years ago and was 3-25 overall and 1-15 in league play last season.

8. Freddie Hill

Goodman: Hill has lost nearly twice as many games as he’s won in his three years since getting the gig. He’s added some talent with guys like Gregory Echenique and Mike Rosario, but they will need to make a move this season after a 2-16 league mark last year.

11. Bobby Gonzalez

Goodman: Gonzo was on his best behavior last season, but he’s been unable to get the program into the postseason in his three years at the helm. The Pirates have finished no higher than 11th in his reign, but this could be the year they break through with the addition of talented, yet enigmatic transfers Herb Pope and Keon Lawrence.
