Former USC commit Taeshon Cherry sets two official visits

By SEAN BOCK

Taeshon Cherry, the 6-foot-8 small forward from Foothills Christian (CA), has set two official visits to Arizona State (Jan. 11) and Texas A&M (Jan. 31/Feb.1), he told 247.

Cherry de-committed from USC on Dec. 23 and has picked up 16 scholarship since playing in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic this past week.

Cherry broke down the Sun Devils and Aggies for 247:

Arizona State: “They have great guards and bring back Remy Martin and also have some great ones coming in with Jaelen House and Kyree Walker. They have a great culture and are rebuilding the program and think I could fit into that.”

Texas A&M: “I just love the way they play. I love their coaches and think they would know how to use me. They run up and down a lot and use their bigs really well.”

Along with those two schools, Cherry said he’s also considering St. John’s, Illinois, and Vanderbilt for his last three official visits.

St. John’s: “J’Raan (Brooks) just committed there and he was committed to USC before. He’s like a best friend to me. They have two Hall of Famers on their coaching staff so that could be a great fit for me.”

Illinois: “Ayo (Dosunmu) went on a visit with me to USC and everything clicked. We’ve been texting a lot. I also really like the way they’re coached.”

Vanderbilt: “I really like the way they play. I think Bryce Drew is a great coach. I think me and Darius (Garland) could make a great duo.”

Former USC assistant coach, Tony Bland, was arrested on Sept. 26 and pleaded not guilty to four charges related to allegations he accepted a bribe for players to use a certain sports agent or financial advisor. There is speculation Cherry re-opened his recruitment due to Bland’s firing.

Playing for the Oakland Soldiers on the EYBL circuit this summer, Cherry averaged 12.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while leading his team to a Peach Jam title along with UConn signee James Akinjo.

According to 247Sports, Cherry is the No. 27 player in the class of 2018 and the No. 2 prospect in the state of California.
