Here’s a quick notebook on Chris Mullin and his St. John’s Red Storm heading into the final weekend of the regular season:
**Regardless of the outcome against Providence on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, the Johnnies (13-17, 7-10 Big East) are locked into the No. 8 seed in next week’s Big East Tournament and will face No. 9 Georgetown on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. (FS1). The winner will face No. 1 Villanova at noon in the first quarterfinal on Thursday.
No. 10 DePaul will face the No. 7 seed at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The following seeds are set: No. 1 Villanova, No. 2 Butler, No. 8 St. John’s, No. 9 Georgetown, No. 10 DePaul.
The Big East Tournament runs March 8-11 at the Garden.
**St. John’s and Duke will renew acquaintances with a home-and-home beginning at the Garden on Feb. 3, 2018, per FanRagSports.com colleague Jon Rothstein.
Duke will then host the game in 2019.
If St. John’s continues to improve — they have won seven Big East games this season after winning just one a year ago — the two games could be interesting.
**St. John’s assistant Matt Abdelmassih will watch 2018 Roselle Catholic forward Naz Reid in RC’s state playoff game on Wednesday night. The Red Storm have made Reid, who recently went off for 36 points and 18 rebounds in front of John Calipari, Abdelmassih and other coaches, a top priority.
