NEWARK — Myles Powell is friends with Trevon Duval and would love for Duval to join him at Seton Hall next season.
“We talk a lot,” Powell told me Sunday after dropping 19 points in Seton Hall’s 86-73 beatdown of St. John’s. “I bring it up sometimes, ask him if he wanna come be my point guard. I’m going to just worry about what I’m doing over here, let him finish off his high school career on a good note. He just got nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Game. I congratulated him.
“I guess after all his accolades and the high school season’s done, then we can move forward into that.”
Asked how much the 6-foot-3 Duval could help Seton Hall, Powell said, “Amazing. I know how Coach [Kevin Willard] lets his guards go. I feel like he would fit in perfect here, I tell him that all the time and hopefully the job gets done.”
Duval spent part of his high school career at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark and was considering several New Jersey schools for his senior season before landing at IMG Academy (FL).
Projected as the No. 6 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com, Duval is down to five schools — Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Baylor and Seton Hall — and said he’s planning to take his official visits soon.
“My dad has all of the dates and everything,” Duval said at the Hoophall Classic. “…Some of them are in season and I might finish out some after the season.”
As for his relationship with Powell, Duval said, “Myles works me a little bit but then again he tries to even it out because he doesn’t want to get too involved in it.”
Powell isn’t alone among players in recruiting Duval, of course.
Wendell Carter said he’s working on getting Duval, Mohamed Bamba and Kevin Knox to Duke, which needs a point guard in 2017.
“I just tell him [if] he come up there and we will be one of the best duos to ever be in college,” Carter said when I asked what his message is to Duval. “Go ahead and try to win the national championship.”
