Bruno Fernando, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center who one Division I coach compared to Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka, committed to Maryland on Sunday.
A native of Angola, Fernando initially committed to SMU in April 2016 before opening up his recruitment and doing a post-grad year at Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy.

Fernando is Maryland’s first 2017 commit and should help offset the losses of Damonte Dodd and L.G. Gill.
“He is very athletic with a very active motor,” IMG Academy coach John Mahoney said. “He’s a rim protector on defense and can play with this back to the basket but also out on the perimeter on offense.
“For us he will play more on the wing. He’s an attractive personality who has great character.”
