St. Anthony head coach Bob Hurley says Dominic Cheek is in “no rush” to trim his list of schools and make a final grouping.
The 6-foot-5 Cheek, the No. 4 shooting guard in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, told reporters in Connecticut last weekend that UConn, Villanova, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Kansas will make the list and that he’s planning an official visit to UConn.
“When I make my list they’re definitely going to be one of the top schools,” Cheek said of UConn. “They have a great coach, they get people to the league (NBA), and they’re known for making deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.”
Hurley said he has spoken with Cheek about colleges, and thinks that the aforementioned list includes some of the key schools Cheek is considering.
“Nothing’s etched in stone. I think the locals, Rutgers and Seton Hall, could hang in there to some extent,” said Hurley, whose team went 32-0 last season, winning the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title and the mythical national championship.
“He would like to make visits in the fall. The good thing with New Jersey starting time so late, we don’t have to rush into anything. He has a test score. He’s able to make his visits. We can get the process started. There’s no real rush.”
St. Anthony just finished playing in the Jersey City summer league, where Cheek dropped 50 points in one game.
“He just kind of went to town,” Hurley said.
Soon the Friars are headed to a team camp in the Poconos, which the coach hopes will lead to some good team building.
