NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Larry Brown has stepped down as the head coach at SMU and will be replaced by associate head coach Tim Jankovich.
“I’m stepping down.,” Brown told ESPN. “I’ve got nothing else to say right now. I have to text the parents of my players.”
Asked by ESPN if there was a health issue, Brown, 75, said “I’m OK.
Billy Embody of the SMU Scout site said Brown resigned over a contract dispute.
Sources told @SMUScout that Larry Brown wanted a 5-year deal from #SMU. SMU was thinking 2-3 years. Brown resigned over extension talks.

Jankovich served as the SMU head coach last season when Brown served a nine-game suspension for NCAA violations related to the Keith Frazier academic fraud case that also led to SMU being banned from the postseason last year..
Brown is the only coach to win both an NBA (Detroit) and NCAA (Kansas) title.
