Mitch Richmond is “going through the hiring process” to become a new assistant coach under St. John’s head coach Chris Mullin, a source told SNY.tv.
Richmond, currently a special advisor to Mullin, is “still a work in progress,” the source said.
If he is named to the staff to replace Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, Richmond would become the first African-American on the St. John’s staff.
As first reported last month by SNY.tv, St. John’s and Rohrssen are parting ways after just one season but no official announcement has yet been made. (Rohrssen is still listed as the team’s associate head coach on the school website.)
With the July live period set to begin Wednesday, Richmond won’t be out on the road recruiting.
Instead, Mullin, assistant coaches Matt Abdelmassih and Greg St. Jean and Director of Basketball Operations Dan Matic will be out recruiting.
Richmond was initially hired in October 2015. He and Mullin played together in Golden State from 1988-91, forming two-thirds of the famous “Run TMC” trio with Tim Hardaway. Mullin was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, and Richmond joined him in 2014.
