Indiana Lands 2017 Guard Al Durham

Indiana got a head start on its 2017 recruiting class on Monday when Al Durham committed to the Hoosiers.

A 6-foot-4 left-handed shooting guard from Lilburn (GA) Berkmar, he also had offers from Georgia, Florida, Virginia Tech and South Florida. North Carolina had also been calling him.

Durham’s father, Al Durham Sr., played high school ball at St. Raymond’s in The Bronx and knows Indiana assistant Chuck Martin from their connection there.

“The biggest thing was the opportunity to come in and play when he gets there,” his father said. “Coach [Tom] Crean has a good reputation of developing guards and getting them to the next level, and that system he has down there is hands down one of the best. And they really, really recruited him. They seemed genuine. And it’s Indiana basketball. When you have Indiana on your trail, it’s hard to say no.”

As for his skill set, his father said, “He’s a left-handed shooter. He can play the one, two or three. He has just that laid back smooth style. You look up, the game’s over and he had 30 and you’re like, ‘Damn, he had 30.’

“He’s going to work on running the team and getting ready.”
