2017 Forward Daniel Mading to St. Anthony’s

4_3028030NEW YORK — Daniel Mading, a 6-foot-10, 198-pound power forward originally from the Sudan who was raised in Australia, is transferring to play for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley at Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony’s, he confirmed to SNY.tv on Monday night.

He attended The Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., last season.

“I’m going to St. Anthony’s in New Jersey,” he said.

Marial Mading, a freshman point guard who is Daniel’s 6-5 younger brother, will also transfer to St. Anthony.

On Friday, Daniel Mading had said at the Big Strick Classic practice that he was deciding between Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s and Brewster (N.H.) Academy.

“I chose St Anthony’s because I have a good relationship with the coach, that’s where me and my family felt comfortable, and because the people there will push me both on and off the court to be at my best,” he told pickandroll.com.au.

He added: “St. Anthony will definitely prepare me for the next level because I’m being coached under a Hall of Fame coach, and just the people, and players, will push me every single day to get better and play my best. I also feel like I’ll learn a lot more about basketball which will have my basketball IQ ready for the next level.”

The additions of the Madings to St. Anthony should bolster the rivalry with Roselle Catholic, which added Baltimore forward Andre Rafus after he considered St. Benedict’s. Roselle Catholic beat St. Anthony twice last season, including in the Non-Public B state title game.

Mading told SNY.tv he’s being recruited hardest by Arizona State, which is coached by Bobby Hurley, along with Arizona, Marquette, Kansas, LSU and Wake Forest. He also holds offers form Florida and UConn.

He told SNY.tv he plans to visit Arizona State soon.

“Sometime this month on an unofficial,” he said of Arizona State.

Asked what he knew about Arizona State, he said, “I know [Coach Bobby Hurley] is a guard coach. I’m definitely going to look into it this upcoming season to see how he controls his team.”

As far as his college career, he said he plans to be a stretch four.

“Someone who’s versatile, who can bring the ball up and get on the block.”

Mading is cousin’s with Orangeville Prep (Ontario) star Thon Maker, a projected 2016 NBA Draft pick.

“I definitely want to get up to where he’s at,” Mading said. “I try to look up to him.”
