John Wall told his local newspaper that Memphis is at the top of his college list, but he won’t announce until April 18 or later.
“Memphis is my leader, but I’m still considering the same other schools. I’ve liked Memphis since last year. I like its playing style. I like the way the coach [John Calipari] gets players to develop,” the 6-foot-4 Wall told the Raleigh News & Observer.
Wall, the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, has visited Kansas, Memphis and Baylor, but is also considering Duke and N.C. State.
“The NCAA Tournament is just starting,” he said. “You get to see all the different teams and follow them in the tournament. I’m just not ready yet.
“I think it’s going to be ‘Yeah, baby, this is the place for me,’ ” he said.
Wall’s former AAU coach, Dwon Clifton, is on the staff at Baylor, but Wall says there’s no guarantee he’ll follow him there.
“It would be cool to be with Dwon, but he tells me that I have to make the best decision for me,” Wall said.
With 6-10 big man DeMarcus Cousins of Mobile (Ala.) LeFlore High recently committing to Memphis, that could help the Tigers land Wall, who has said he would like to play with a dominant big man.
Memphis’ recruiting class is already stacked with five star-prospects Cousins and Xavier Henry and four-star recruits Will Coleman, Darnell Dodson and Nolan Dennis.
Wall could announce before the Jordan Brand All-American Game April 18 at Madison Square Garden, but he could also opt to wait.
