Stephenson to Announce at McDonald's Game

Lance Stephenson will make his college announcement March 31 at the McDonald’s All-American Game in Miami and will likely choose from between defending NCAA champion Kansas and St. John’s.

The 6-foot-5 Stephenson, ranked No. 1 in the Class of 2009 by Hoop Scoop and No. 9 by Rivals, had initially said he might announce after Saturday’s PSAL championship game at Madison Square Garden.

Top-seeded Lincoln is seeking its fourth straight PSAL title and will face No. 2 Kennedy at noon at the Garden.

Instead, Stephenson will wait until March 31, with Kansas or St. John’s the likeliest destinations. Kansas assistant Danny Manning and St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts have been tracking Stephenson in recent weeks.

Stephenson has taken an official visit to Kansas and has seen St. John’s unofficially on numerous occasions.

He also took a much-discussed official visit to Maryland but a source with knowledge said Maryland is basically out of the picture.

  • I’m callin’ b.s. here…

Maryland is out of the running? Who is this so-called source? What is the reason?

I think either you are mistaken or the source is mistaken, because everything I’ve read has the chatter on lance to the terps rising and the kansas fans seem to think the same thing

If he was going to St. Johns, why not announce in NYC?

I think it’s b/e kansas and the terps…why would he want to miss the tourny in his one year at school?

  • Zagoria, you are merely part of the Lance’s big surprise if you were told that MD is out of the running. Smart people use the media not the other way around.

  • No way MD is out of the running. It’s between MD and Kansas. He knows he can continue to build back up MD, it has a good media market, his buddy James is going there too, and it will be familiar to him.

Plus, he knows Gary Williams will make him a better player in the 1 year he is there.
