Dewan Huell: Three State Championships in Three Years, Four Schools Working Hardest

9R4A5042By JACK LeGWIN

LAKELAND, Fla.– Not many players get to accomplish in their whole career what Dewan Huell has accomplished in only three years.

When Miami Norland won their fourth straight 6A State Championship, that meant that juniors Huell, and teammate David-Jean Baptiste had won three state championships in the three years that they had played for head coach Lawton Williams at Miami Norland. The win gave Williams his sixth state championship win.

“Not too many kids have three rings,” Huell told SNY.tv. “Not many schools four-peat.”

While the Vikings have won four straight, Huell says the mindset never changes.

“Get better and be back here in Lakeland next year,” Huell said. “My averages went up this year, only trying to get better for next year.”

Ranked No. 23 in the nation in the class of 2016 by 247 Sports, Huell averaged 20 points, 12.5 rebounds, 7.5 blocks a game in wins over Tampa Jefferson and Gainesville.

Huell said that while many schools have been in contact, four have separated themselves, and are working the hardest.

“Florida, FSU, Miami and USF,” Huell said. “There are other schools, but those are the schools that are contacting me the most.”

Huell currently holds offers from Florida, Florida State, Miami, Louisville, South Florida, Alabama, Kansas, North Carolina, Ole’ Miss and Wake Forest.
