Just one day after Louisville head man Rick Pitino met with 2016 Henderson (NV) Findlay Prep point guard Derryck Thornton, news surfaced that Louisville has offered the five-star point guard not only for the 2016 year, which is his current classification, but for the 2015-16 season.
“Louisville has only been recruiting the 6-2, 165-pound point guard for about a week,” Jerry Meyer wrote Wednesday, “but Pitino has not only offered Thornton a scholarship but has also offered him one as a 2015 prospect.”
Thornton’s father stated that although it is unlikely that his son would reclassify to 2015, the family is considering the possibility. Moving into 2015, if academically eligible, would ramp up recruitment, something Pitino’s already doing as the national championship coach stopped by to watch him on Wednesday at the Tarkanian Classic. Pitino also saw 2017 point guard Troy Brown on the trip to Las Vegas.
Thornton is currently the No. 7 ranked player in the 247Sports 2016 Composite Player Rankings and is being recruited by some of the top names in college hoops, recently cutting his list to Duke, Kentucky, Michigan, Louisville, Arizona, California, USC, Miami, UNLV and N.C. State.
