SUWANEE, Ga.– MJ Walker is something special.
The starting shooting guard for the ATL Xpress 17U on the Under Armour circuit as a freshman, Walker has shown that he can play with the best of the best.
“I take a lot of pride in my defense,” Walker told SNY.tv. “If you can make stops, most of the time you will win. But that is what I take pride in.”
Listed at 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, Walker has the frame of a grown man, and has accomplished something in one year of high school that most seniors dream about, a state championship. Leading Jonesboro (Ga.) to a state title, Walker averaged 15.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists a contest.
“Looking forward to my sophomore year, I really want another State Championship,” Walker said. “I just want to become a better player than I was last year, and put as much work as possible to do so.”
A first team Max Preps All-American, Walker is a freak athlete who has a serious amount of strength, and could be compared with another top combo guard, SMU-bound McDonald’s All American Emmanuel Mudiay. He plays hard on both sides of the ball, possesses a very long first step, and has an uncanny ability to finish at the bucket.
“I didn’t really expect to be an All-American this year to be honest,” Walker said. “It was really an honorable moment, shows that the work paid off. I definitely want to be an All-American again, that is what I am shooting for.”
Walker has been offered by Auburn, and says that Ohio State has shown significant interest.
