St. John’s Rysheed Jordan to Miss Sunday’s Game Against DePaul

NCAA Basketball: Creighton at St. John'sSt. John’s coach Steve Lavin announced that point guard Rysheed Jordan would not play in Sunday’s game against DePaul because of the death of a close relative.

“Rysheed attended Niaja’s [Kane] funeral yesterday in Philadelphia and he will return to New York tonight,” Lavin said. “This has been a very challenging week for Rysheed and his family as they have been grieving this tragic loss.

“It’s clear that Rysheed needs more time before returning to action. He will not suit up for tomorrow’s game but will be on the bench to support his teammates. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Rysheed and his family.”

The Daily News reported that Kane was Jordan’s aunt and the two had been very close growing up. Kane was shot and killed in what has been called a double-homicide in Philadelphia on Feb. 22. The Johnnies were playing Villanova when the police discovered Kane’s body in a residence in Philadelphia.

Jordan will be on the bench in street clothes for the game on Sunday.

Jordan was named 2013-14 Preseason Big East Rookie of the Year and has been monumental in the Red Storm’s surge back into contention for an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. Jordan has averaged 9 points and 3 assists per game this season for the Red Storm.
